Now Recruiting – Veterans Who Are Semper Gumby – Gig Line 8
Anyone who served in the military knows that things don’t always (ever?) go as planned.
According to Wikipedia, “Semper Gumby” is an unofficial motto for the United States Marines, the US Coast Guard, US Public Health Services Commissioned Corps, Navy submariners, Navy Seabees, Army Unit Supply Specialists and the Civil Air Patrol. It means “Always Flexible”. Of note, there actually exists a real latin expression for this – semper flexibilis.
Leave it to the military to come up with a slang expression that is both funny and poignant. Another slogan of the Marines is “Improvise. Adapt. Overcome”, which seems to be the non-latin version of Semper Gumby.
Improvising, adapting and overcoming are needed in the non-military world, too. Business owners must be able to handle adversity through improvising when there are no guidelines or training, adapting to change and overcoming adversity and setbacks.
We are looking for veterans with Semper Gumby on their resume. No matter how much training and support a franchise brand can provide, franchisees will sometimes find themselves alone and they will need to dig deep and get through the challenge at hand. Ex-military types tend to have a higher tolerance for challenges. This makes for better business relationships in every direction – customer facing, internally and externally – and it makes for a more successful business.
The good news about the Parking Lot Striping business is that it’s pretty straightforward. No dealing with home owners who tend to be very tough to please. As a G-FORCE™ Parking Lot Striping franchise owner you’re generally dealing with sophisticated property owners and facility managers. You get in, get the job done, get out and get paid.
But, every once in a while, you’ll need to be Semper Gumby.
